Snowdon - to new heights

On top of the world

Only 3 months or so after having open heart surgery Richard was already regularly asking me to climb Snowdon with him. I must admit that I avoided it for a while, imagining all that might go wrong. Finally, in January, just over 6 months after his leaving hospital we took the plunge. My son Jonny also came along to carry down whichever of us collapsed first!

The day we chose turned out to be the only good one for weeks around. Early cloud and high winds eased to blue skies and icy snow. We didn't rush, but Richard moved steadily and reached the summit for his lunch. You can see from the pictures below what beautiful summit views we enjoyed. After lunch I asked Richard if he had ever climbed the second highest in Wales, so we headed off to climb Garnedd Ugain as well. The descent of the top of the Pyg Track needed care in rather icy conditions, but at least we weren't trying to do it in trainers or pink wellies, as others were doing!

Richard obviously enjoyed his day and got great satisfaction in achieving what seemed impossible a year before. The climb clearly demonstrated to his employers that he is fit to go back to work. Richard has his sights on the Glyders next ...
